Garment workers honoured by the Government
There cannot be more proud moment for any garment worker than getting their work appreciated at the state level and getting rewarded by the Government. Raj Kumar, Baby Jha and Sheela, three workers of Modelama Exports, felt the same sense of pride when Haryana state government recently recognised their work by giving them cash award and certificates. Nayab Singh Saini, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Haryana honoured them in an event at Nehru Stadium, Gurgaon.
With factories in Gurgaon and Indonesia, Modelama Exports is one of the well-known apparel exporters of India who majorly supplies outerwear to the global brands and retailers.
These workers were honoured on the basis of good performance with respect to their skills, discipline, punctuality, attendance, extraordinary contribution to production and encouraging other employees towards their duty for the company. Each of the three has been given a cash prize of Rs. 20,000 (US $ 290).
Raj Kumar (45) from Nawada (Bihar) is in cutting department and has been awarded Shram Veer Purushkar. He started working in the garment industry 19 years ago and from day one he has been working for Modelama Exports. “The facilities, support and respect I got here, motivated me to continue working with the same organisation. I have invested the prize money in fixed deposit in the name of my brother’s daughter,” he said.
36-year-old Sheela, mother of 2 sons and a daughter, is a tailor in sampling department. She is well aware about compliance and has good soft skills too. “In the 6 years of my working in this company, I got opportunities for training and visited some places too. I learned a lot from that,” she says and adds smilingly, “I am planning to buy gold jewellery for my daughter.”
Similar is the experience of Baby Jha, a sewing operator in the production department. “Bhanu, my son, is very much happy on my achievement; afterall, he got a laptop from this prize money. It will now help him to do better in his BCA,” said Baby who got lot of training during her working of 18 years in the company.
HERhealth training by Ann Taylor proved most beneficial for her. She has dedicated half of her life for the company and is happy with the respect that she got from her co-workers, seniors and management.
Both Sheela and Baby have been awarded Shram Veerangana Purushkar.
“As a member of works committee, these three have made significant contributions towards best labour practices in our company and have motivated others too. These workers are like a bridge between other workers and management. This recognition has motivated lot of other workers too and they are now enthusiastic to get the same award in future,” shared Arvind Rai, Director of the company.
Under the able leadership of Lalit Gulati, Chairman of the company, the four-decade-old Modelama Exports continues its path of unprecedented growth.
Shop floor to sports ground
Labour department of Haryana state level recently organised labour athletic championship. From textile and apparel industry of the state, Dinesh Singh of Shivalik Prints, Faridabad; Santoshi of Shahi Exports, Faridabad; Suman Bala and Ritu of DCM Textiles, Hisar were winners in different track and field events, etc. Nayab Singh Saini, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Haryana, gave cash awards to various winners.
